Smoggie Queens Returns for a Second Series on BBC Three and iPlayer

Teesside’s very own award-winning sitcom Smoggie Queens is set to return for a second series, with the BBC officially confirming its recommission for BBC Three and iPlayer.

Created by Middlesbrough’s own Phil Dunning, the comedy recently scooped the Best Comedy award at the RTS North East Awards, while Dunning himself took home the Best Newcomer accolade. Following the show’s success, fans can now look forward to even more laughter and heartfelt moments from the beloved characters.

The first series saw cameras rolling in various Teesside locations, including Hartlepool Headland, Whitby, and Thornaby. The upcoming season promises to deliver even more hilarity, with “plenty of slapstick humour, witty one-liners from Dickie, and a healthy dose of joy,” according to the BBC.

Dunning, who not only created the show but also stars as the charismatic Dickie, expressed his delight:

“Really made up that the BBC have recommissioned Smoggie Queens. I’ve pencilled it in my diary.”

He’ll be joined once again by the fan-favourite cast, including Mark Benton as Mam, Alexandra Mardell as Lucinda, Patsy Lowe as Sal, and Elijah Young as Stewart. Together, the characters will continue to navigate the ups and downs of life, love, and friendship, while celebrating the resilience and spirit of the North East’s queer community.

Chris Jones, the show’s producer, shared his enthusiasm:

“So glad we get to go back to the Boro for more Smoggie Queens. Really grateful to the BBC for giving this big old queer show another run.”

The show’s positive reception has clearly left an impression, with Hat Trick Productions’ Managing Director Jimmy Mulville adding:

“We all need a feel-good, laugh-out-loud show to watch, so thank God Smoggie Queens is coming back! Who wouldn’t want to hang out with the funniest, craziest, and most lovable crew on TV?”

BBC Director of Comedy Jon Petrie echoed the sentiment:

“Smoggie Queens is back—along with the wigs, the big laughs, and the brilliantly chaotic energy that made us fall in love with Dickie and the gang. This show is something special.”

The second series will continue to explore the importance of chosen family, rekindling old connections, and embracing new beginnings — all set against the vibrant backdrop of Teesside. With its unique mix of humour and heart, Smoggie Queens is sure to capture the audience’s affection once again.
